Joint Pain And Aging? Can it be slowed down?

No Doubt:  Getting older hurts — and when it comes to joint and muscle pain, the doctors at NYC Pain MD are seeing increasing numbers of not only baby boomers with bad joints . . . arthritic knees, sore backs, stiff shoulders, and other complaints but those in the younger years…their 20 30s and 4o’s.  Often, many were once highly active in High School or College but find 10 years later, 20 years later, wear and tear and “Father Time” and “Mother Nature” have started to catch up leaving new issues ranging from mild simple strains to deeper damage and impairments of daily life with stiff aching and “creaky” joints… often comparing themselves to a “rusty old gate”.

They now find themselves facing the need for medical interventions and therapies as their daily activities slow or come to a screeching halt.

This is clearly not an acceptable scenario for most.

Why do joints “age”?

Here’s the background story

Every joint in your body… knees, shoulders, hips. Etc… is covered or surrounded by an air-tight capsule that looks somewhat like a hollowed-out peeled orange or grapefruit.  Under normal circumstances, special cells line the capsule that produces a thick, oily-like substance called “SYNOVIAL FLUID”.  This fluid allows for friction-free motion, reduces the pressure put on the joint, and neutralizes inflammatory chemicals created during typical daily use. Think of Synovial Fluid as similar to oil in your car’s engine… needing to be at proper levels and fresh to reduce friction to a minimum, improve function, and extend the life of the engine. Synovial Fluid could really be called “JOINT OIL”.

Here is the problem:

As we age, these cells that used to produce a full complement of Synovial Fluid begin to age and then start to under-function or actually die off allowing the level of the protective Synovial fluid to diminish over time.  As this occurs, friction increases leading to rubbing and grinding which eats away at and degenerates the protective “Teflon—like’ cartilage protecting the surface of the bones in your joints.

Then… slowly over time, the space becomes more and more narrow as this grinding persists.

THE JOINT AGES: This may go on for years slowly damaging the joint without you feeling any symptoms.  However, eventually, you will begin, in most cases, to get stiffness, soreness, progressive pain, and narrowing of the joint space.  Neglected long enough and the result may become the dreaded “BONE-ON-BONE” syndrome but in call cases symptoms of pain, stiffness, and rigidity slowly progress leaving you with the “Rusty Gate” syndrome.

While this alone can lead to serious pain syndromes, it also predisposes those suffering to an increased risk of injury and more serious and long-lasting effects of injury. Healing slows and disability can accumulate.
